Amsterdam Red Light District Crack Down

To Peter, Jesus declared: “I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven”. The word "church" here is Ekklesia, which referred to the principle assembly of democracy in Athens during its golden age. Through this declaration, Jesus was speaking life into a body of believers that would walk with governmental authority and bring the culture to Heaven to earth through their words and actions.

Last weekend, a team from Berlin, UK and beyond came together to help a local team launch a Burn Furnace in Amsterdam, right in the heart of the red light district. The venue where we gathered, called The Tabernacle, is an active part of YWAM Amsterdam's ministry and regularly hosts prayer, worship and intercession. It was beautiful to see such unity in the body as members of YWAM, BURN and representatives from local churches united to lift up the name of Jesus over the city!

Just a few steps from where we met, prostitutes were selling themselves to the thousands of tourists who come to the city for easy access to drugs and sex. Through each set we declared that Amsterdam was made for more than it's reputation, and spoke life over men and women who were enslaved to lust, perversion and sexual immorality. After hours of worship, intercession and prayer walks around the city, we felt the atmosphere change and saw a new level of openness on the streets to prayer, even right in front of the brothels.

One week later, news headlines are broadcasting that new laws were recently passed that crackdown on sex tourism in the city, requiring tourists to turn their backs to prostitutes as they walk through the red light district. Coincidence? Hardly. We believe that the Lord is and will continue to move in mighty ways in Amsterdam due to the faithfulness of sons and daughters who are standing in the gap for this city. It's time for the Ekklesia to rise up around the world and pray for our cities and leaders in faith that He will bring justice, righteousness and peace to the places we call home!
